  8. LYNCH--Owen M. PhD. Owen M. Lynch, PhD., of New York City passed away peacefully on April 26, 2013. He was 82 years old. Owen was the Charles F. Noyes Professor of Anthropology at New York University from 1974 until his retirement in 2003. Previously he taught on the Anthropology faculty of SUNY Binghamton. His contributions to urban anthropology and to the study of the Dalit community, formerly known as Untouchables, emotions in Indian life and the politics of emancipation led to his recognition as one of the outstanding scholars of South Asia. His works demonstrated his personal belief that anthropology could be a force of social action and justice. He was a central figure in shaping both the anthropological community and the South Asianist community in New York City. He was loved and respected by his family, students and colleagues, not only for his professional work but for his generosity of time and spirit, his good humor, and his soft-spoken, wise and fully-engaged presence. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Prep, Fordham University and Columbia University. Owen is survived by his brother, John Lynch of East Rockaway, NY, his sister, Betty Dowling of Natrona Heights, PA, and seventeen nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013, at 12:00pm at The Faculty House of Columbia University, 64 Morningside Dr., New York.

  10. Although I was dismissed from The Prep for failing grades after 2 years, there is a soft spot in my heart for its cameraderie and friendship. I grew up with many Prep men, John O'Malley, John J. Riley, John Messina (talk about it, I did NOT name my son John) were a few. I finished at St Augustine's, and went on to receive a McNamara Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Science Music and Culture. The rest was a breeze. 28 years with the Port Authority Police during which time I became an Attorney (with no help from them) and a Prosecutor in New Jersey. Now retired, I was diagnosed with several Agent Orange related ailments but am still mobile and enjoying life to the hilt.
You guys were, and still are, my Brothers. BP & StA's strengthened me and nourished me in times of much turmoil, and brought me home safe and sound!

  12. My daughter is graduating from Brown in a few weeks; then on to Washington U in St Louis for a terminal MA in Classics...yup Greek & Latin, mirabile dictu as Fr.Alexander would say. BTW my wife was on her HS Latin Sight Team at Mater Christi. I dropped Latin after my required 3 years... had my fill of arma virumque cano, all of Gaul, and agricola, but encountered even more Latin in law than at BP--res ipsa loquitur, nunc pro tunc, de novo, ad infinitum.
